Trout anglers annually keep about 40% of caught trout. The other 60% are caught and released back into the water. If these fish are not released carefully they will swim away and die.

We urge anglers to follow the simple rules below to increase the survival chances of trout that are released.

Never
squeeze a fish or rip the hook out.
throw a fish back into the water.
put your fingers in the gills.
let the fish thrash around on the ground.

Always
if possible leave the fish in the water and unhook it without touching it.
if this isn’t possible, use a soft knotless net and carefully lift the fish.
leave the fish in the net, and without touching it, remove the hook using a hook remover or long-nosed pliers.
if you must handle the fish, wet your hands first.
hold the fish gently upside down to remove the hook as trout lie more quietly in this position.
support the fish gently upright in the water until it swims away.
Resuscitate

If your catch is exhausted from a long, drawn out fight it will enter a state of almost unconsciousness. In this condition the trout will not be able to swim off when you release it. Instead the trout will float belly up. If this occurs or if you suspect that your trout is to weak to swim away you will need to perform trout CPR.

We Hoveys never bought into that Christmas morning business. We’d head to the kid-friendly 5:00 Christmas Eve service, agonize through everything after the first 10 minutes of the pageant, use those little pencils to draw all over the offering envelopes and then rush home. While the men boozed it up, our mom and aunt would take us to the other end of the house so we could throw on tiny kimonos, gussy for photos and – most importantly – watch for Rudolph’s nose. We’d find some blinking red light, a mirage of Christmas dreams, and scream like we’d seen a Beatle or Elvis. Then, suddenly, we’d hear a commotion near the front door. “Santa!!! STOOOOOPPPP!!!!!,” our grandpa would bellow as he ran after him (Santa, being all knowing, knew that we kept the flue closed, so he used the door to avoid trouble). We’d run like gazelles to catch him, but we were always a step behind. However, the heaps of presents were a nice distraction from our failed hunt. I, being very goal oriented, would always tear through my gifts like a greedy ingrate, while Porter, being very attention seeking yet sweet, patiently tortured me with her careful pace and wild rounds of joy tears and hugs following each gift, be it a stereo or a mop (Santa did bring cleaning supplies one year in hopes that we’d use them…so much for being all-knowing). Three or four hours later, after Porter was all dried up, we’d settle down for our feast – a feast we kids never understood: Shepherd’s Pie. This is when I’d finally start to cry.

The oldest living Girl Scout is 102-year-old Marianne Elser Crowder, born in Colorado Springs in April 1906. “I don’t feel that old,” says Marianne. The Wagon Wheel Council named Crowder the nation’s oldest Girl Scout after it conducted a nationwide search and sifted through council archives. Scouting taught her lifelong skills and created lasting friendships. “We learned to cook, and we learned to make fires outside,” Crowder recalls. Sewing and first aid were among other skills she picked up from Girl Scouts. She remembers making bandages for soldiers during World War I. Her nickname was Zip. “I could run fast,” she explains.
